Transitional Courses Offered
ENC 090 Foundations of College
Writing I:
 This
class is an introduction to college writing. We review basic
grammar while writing paragraph-length assignments. Students
learn to use their own experiences as material for writing about
important events in their lives. They also write about the processes
they use for doing some of the things that they do and ideas
that they have formed based on things they have seen, read,
or done. And students will learn more about using computers
to word process their work and to practice grammar skills. This
course is for students whose COMPASS scores in writing are between
21 and 37.
ENC 091 Foundations of College
Writing II:
This class is an introduction to writing college
essays. We review basic grammar while creating multi-paragraphed
writings. Students first learn to consider the people who will
read their writing and then examine several ways to organize
their material so that those people will better understand the
ideas that the students want to communicate to them. Students
will visit the library and learn how to find information there,
and they will learn how to find ideas for writing through reading.
This course is for students whose COMPASS scores in writing
are between 38 and 69.
ENC 092 Writing Lab
This is a one-hour class for previous ENC 091
students to take while they take ENG 101. It provides them an
opportunity to ask questions about their ENG 101 assignments.
No textbook is required and they get immediate assistance with
any writing problem they may have.
MT 055 Pre-Algebra
This course covers fundamental basics of arithmetic
and algebra to prepare students for the Elementary Algebra course.
Topics include fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, proportions,
positive and negative numbers, and basic equations. This course
may be supplemented with the use of computer tutorials.
MT 065 Elementary Algebra
This course is similar to a high school Algebra
I course. This course provides the necessary algebra skills
that prepare students for MAH 121 Mathematics for Business,
MAH 151 Applied Mathematics, and MAH 083 Intermediate Algebra.
Most sections of the Elementary Algebra class are taught in
the traditional lecture format with possibly some group work
depending upon the particular instructor. Computer tutorials
are available at no charge for installation on students' home
computers. These tutorials provide extra practice and guided
examples. A few sections are taught using the ALEKS Internet
program. Students purchase an access code in the bookstore that
allows them to use the program. Students work problems on their
paper and enter the answers on the computer. The ALEKS classes
meet in a computer classroom with an instructor who provides
help and guidance. Students should have Internet access at home
so that they can complete additional work at home.
RDG 010 Introduction to College
Reading
This course helps students read better. Students
learn new words and practice finding details which help them
follow and better understand the stories they read. Students
will read several stories and articles and one or two novels
during the semester. This course is for students whose COMPASS
reading scores are between 35 and 50.
RDG 020 Improved College Reading
Students in this course improve their reading
and writing vocabularies and, through practice, improve their
reading rates. And, while reading a wide range of materials,
they work on comprehension skills and learn what questions to
ask to help them decide if the material they are reading is
honest, important, and useful. This course is for students whose
COMPASS reading scores are between 51 and 69.
RDG 030
This course helps students prepare for a wide
range of college-level reading materials including articles
and textbooks. Students work to improve their reading and writing
vocabularies and their critical thinking skills as they learn
to ask questions and evaluate what the writers are saying. This
course is for students whose COMPASS reading scores are between
70 and 80.
Linked Courses
MT 55/MT 65 Pre-Algebra and
Basic Algebra with Measurement
ENC 90/ENC 91 Foundations of College Writing I and II
RDG 20/RDG 30 Improved College Reading and Reading for the College
Classroom
Each semester the Division of Transitional Education offers
these course packages. They are designed to enable students
who test into MT 55, ENC 90, or RDG 20 to do two semesters
of work in only one semester. The way it works is that the
first class finishes at mid-term and then the second class
begins. These classes meet four days a week.
Students who are most likely to succeed in these classes are
those who score high within the COMPASS range for MT 55, ENC
90, or RDG 20. Students often take two of these course packages
in one semester, but it is not recommended that a student take
all three.
